Welcome to AQUA Studio! AQUA is a wellness sanctuary in the heart of TriBeCa and the unique home to AQUACYCLING — a cycling experience in four feet of water that harmoniously pairs the challenge of high-intensity cardio and full-body toning with the natural healing properties of salt water.
Our classes are designed to be semi-private with a maximum of 14 guests per class. Most of our Aquacycling classes are Women only. Classes range in length from 30 minutes to an hour but are generally 45 minutes long. For our male clients, we offer four 45-min Co-ed classes per week.Scroll for an overview of: BENEFITS & REASONS TO AQUACYCLE WHICH CLASS FOR MY FIRST TIME? BENEFITS AND REASONS TO AQUACYCLE
The inherent resistance (viscosity) and low-impact properties of water create an environment that supports a diverse range of fitness goals.
The even pressure and massage of moving in water benefits physical performance of athletes and nonathletes alike by improving blood and lymphatic circulation, which helps keep muscles fresh with oxygen and flushed of lactic acid (a by-product of muscle exertion). The additional cushion of water’s buoyancy also supports an active lifestyle for weight loss, post-injury recovery and pregnancy*.
*Pregnant or post-pregnancy guests may complement Aquacycling further, with Pre/Postnatal Yoga classes hosted in partnership with Maternal Maven Latham Thomas from MamaGlow. Learn more here
Note: You do not need to know how to swim to aquacycle. Our pool is a comfortable four feet deep and an inviting 84 degrees. All our instructors are also lifeguard certified. Although aquacycling is not a swimming class, it is a great primer for non-swimmers to reap the benefits of water workouts while growing confident moving in water.

Bike Set-up: Instructors are available 10 minutes before class for bike-setup tutorials.
Head Wear: We do not require a swim cap, but hair must be pulled back in a hair tie.
Shower: We require everyone to shower in the locker room or on the deck before entering the pool.
Lost Items: We are not responsible for lost or stolen personal items.
WHAT TO BRING
Attire: While some of our clients prefer a one-piece bathing suit, others like to wear a sports bra and bikini bottom. The most important is to select a supportive top and a comfortable bottom. Stop by our retail shop at the studio for examples of beautiful and functional swimwear that is ideal for aquacycling.
Water shoes: Water shoes are required to cycle in the pool. If you do not own a pair, we rent shoes for $2. If you’re bringing or purchasing water shoes, they should be closed-toe. Although we recommend shoes made from rubber, water shoes made with fabric elements are also welcome.
Water bottle: We recommend bringing your own water bottle to stay hydrated. We also have Evian water available for $2.
Small plastic bag: We provide a plastic bag for your wet suit but highly encourage you to bring your own to help reduce the waste of plastic.
Locker room & lockers: We have a fully stocked locker room with five showers and lockers outfitted with digital locks.
Towels: In our efforts to be more sustainable, we provide one large towel per guest. Additional towel rental is $1.
INTRO TO AQUACYCLING TECHNIQUE & EXPERIENCE
HOW TO CREATE AND FEEL RESISTANCE PEDALING IN WATER: First, have your instructor make sure your bike is set to the proper resistance. Unlike land-based cycling where you can change your resistance manually during class, all AQUA bikes are pre-set to 1 of 3 resistances at the start of class depending on the class level (3 being the most resistance from your bike).
Next, since the push and pull principle of pedaling is different in the water than on land, check your pedaling form. Apart from your bike’s resistance setting, the real resistance, or drag, is actually created by how fast you pedal in the water. Keep in mind that there’s no momentum in the water — when you stop pedaling, you stop moving. Water provides a resistance which is proportional to the effort exerted against it. Pedal smooth to allow yourself to go faster, and therefore work stronger and more efficiently.
There are two ways to achieve resistance through good pedaling form. One, emphasize pulling up to even out the effects of buoyancy resisted downstroke and buoyancy assisted upstroke. Second, be sure your shoulders and core remains steady and do not rock from side to side throughout your ride.
For more help, our instructors are happy to describe and practice these techniques with you before, during and after class.
POST-WORKOUT EXPECTATIONS: Don’t be surprised if, the next day, you do not feel any pain. In the water, there is no impact on your joints, muscles and bones and you are much less likely to cause any micro-trauma to your muscle fibers and connective tissue. The movement of water (and especially warm water) against and over the body results in massage and relaxation, which in turn helps to eliminate pain usually resulting from our workouts.
MORE ABOUT OUR POOL
We have a salt water pool system, kept at a comfortable 84 degrees F.
Salt water systems differ because the chemicals needed to maintain an extremely clean and sterile pool are generated through the salts themselves. While there is still chlorine in the pool, it is much less harsh and much more subtle than traditional chlorine-treated pools.
We hold our studio to an extremely high standard of cleanliness. We staff a team of pool maintenance professionals to ensure the quality and safety of the pool water. Additionally, our pool is tested and vacuumed twice daily. We have a full time cleaning staff.
